Person at desk thinking with pencil and blank paper

Well, here I go again.

I’ve been staring at this blank page for close to 30 minutes, but not only is this page blank… so is my brain. So, what’s the problem?

What Exactly Is Blank Page Syndrome?

According to ChatGPT, Blank Page Syndrome is an acute form of writer’s block or creative paralysis experienced when facing an empty document or canvas. It causes dread and anxiety, often fueled by perfectionism, looming deadlines, or simply feeling overwhelmed.

Does that sound right to you?

It does for me.

There’s something about that wide-open, untouched page that feels… intimidating. Like it’s judging you before you even begin. And the more you stare at it, the louder the silence gets.

So… How Do We Break Through It?

Did you know there are ways to overcome this dilemma?

Of course you did. You’re all smart people. And yet—here we are—sitting in front of blank pages more often than we’d like to admit.

Let’s start here:

Look at Things Differently

Changing your mindset is key. Let your imagination wander a little.
What if the flowers in your garden started talking to you?
What if your car took midnight cruises around the neighborhood while you slept?
Or your books quietly rearranged themselves while you were out?

Sometimes the silliest thoughts unlock the most meaningful stories.

Make a List… Just Words

No pressure. No sentences. Just words.
This turns your blank page into something playful instead of intimidating.
And who knows? One of those random words might spark your next post.

Routine, Routine, Routine

Make writing a habit—whatever that looks like for you.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday?
Just weekends?
Every day for 10 minutes?

Consistency builds momentum, even when inspiration is nowhere to be found.

Change Your Scenery

We all love our favorite writing spot, but sometimes a change can do wonders.
A different room, a coffee shop, your patio… even your car!

A fresh view can bring fresh ideas.

Start in the Middle

Who says you have to begin at the beginning?
Jump right into the heart of your story.
Odds are, once you get going, the beginning will find its way to you.

Final Thoughts

I think I’ll take some of these ideas and try them the next time I run headfirst into Blank Page Syndrome. It certainly couldn’t hurt.

Because the truth is… the page isn’t really blank.

It’s waiting.

Waiting for anything—your thoughts, your randomness, your imperfect words—to bring it to life.

Your Turn

What do you do when the page won’t cooperate?

I’d love to hear your tricks, your habits, even your struggles. After all, we’re all just trying to fill that blank space… one word at a time.
