It’s funny how life brings people together in the most unexpected ways. About three years ago, I started a Grief Support group, seeking comfort and connection after loss. That’s where I met Barbara and Donna—two kind-hearted women who were navigating life after losing their husbands. What started as shared grief slowly blossomed into genuine friendship.
Interestingly, Barbara and I actually met first through my Coloring Club. She was carrying a heavy heart at the time, and I remember how coloring helped offer her a bit of peace. Donna joined the group a little later, also finding comfort in the quiet creativity and camaraderie we shared.
Fast forward to today, and our friendship has become something we all truly value. This week, I had the pleasure of hosting Barbara and Donna at my home for lunch. Nothing fancy—just some cold cuts and brioche rolls, with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a delicious red potato salad on the side. We sat inside while we ate, laughing and chatting about everything from stories of yesteryear to what’s been happening lately in our neighborhoods.
After lunch, we moved out to the patio. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect—sunny, warm, and just right for an afternoon of relaxed conversation.
Ken joined us as well, and the ladies always enjoy having him around. It wasn’t long before the topic of knee replacements came up (as it tends to these days!), and we all shared our own experiences with surgeries, recoveries, and the frustrations and victories that come with healing.
It was such a pleasant afternoon—simple, heartfelt, and full of connection. Moments like these remind me how healing it is to be surrounded by people who understand, support, and truly care.
We’ll definitely do it again. Some friendships are forged in hard times, but they grow into something warm and lasting—and for that, I’m deeply grateful.
When was the last time you had friends over for lunch?
