Phoenix Zoo, tigers

We had a wonderful morning today.

Ken and I went to the Phoenix Zoo…again.

As members, we were able to get in at 8:00 a.m., and let me tell you—what a lovely time of day to be there. The weather was cool, in the low 70s, with a soft blanket of clouds overhead. It was the kind of morning that just invites you to slow down and enjoy every step. Even better? No crowds. And at this stage in life, Ken and I appreciate that more than ever.

But today, I’m not going to tell you about the whole trip.

This one is all about the tigers.

First, I have to say this—I love tigers.

No, I mean I LOVE tigers.

There’s something about them that goes beyond ordinary beauty. Their powerful bodies, those slow, confident, almost regal strides…their massive teeth, sharp eyesight, and those breathtaking colors that remind me of a desert sunset. To me, they are simply mesmerizing.

🌿 A Quiet Beginning…Then Magic

When we first arrived at the enclosure, there were no tigers in sight.

Maybe it was too early, I thought.

But then…movement.

Out came Joanne, the female. And let me tell you—she had already found herself breakfast…a rabbit in a tree! Not exactly the kind of breakfast I’m used to, but for her, just another morning.

This is Joanne the tiger.

Then came Raul. The trainers gave him about two pounds of raw ground beef. He ate a bit, but honestly? He didn’t seem all that impressed. Maybe he’s a bit picky…or maybe he had something better in mind.

Tigers, being solitary by nature, were in separate areas, but close enough to see—and “talk”—to each other through the fencing. Even in that quiet space, you could feel their presence.

Then came the part that truly thrilled me—the training session.

Three trainers arrived—two women and one man (who I’m pretty sure was the golf cart driver, but hey, he played his part!).

They unlocked the inner door, and Joanne immediately perked up. She heard those keys and knew exactly what was coming. She approached slowly, but there was this unmistakable anticipation in her movements.

She and the trainer had an understanding.

Joanne would perform…

And she’d be rewarded with raw meat.

But these weren’t just tricks for entertainment. Each movement had a purpose:

  • Standing on her hind legs for body inspection
  • Allowing a needle prick for vaccinations
  • Sitting and rolling over

All part of keeping her healthy and strong.

Then it was Raul’s turn.

Raul is face- to-face with me.

Let’s just say…he wasn’t quite as enthusiastic. He did what was asked—but on his terms. There’s something oddly charming about that kind of stubborn independence.

When the training ended, both of these exquisite creatures lingered near the glass.

And then it happened.

Raul stood on one side…

I stood on the other…

Face-to-face.

My heart nearly jumped right out of my chest.

All I wanted—truly—was to reach out and run my fingers through that beautiful coat. But of course, I like my fingers exactly where they are, so I kept them to myself!

Still, in that moment, I felt something powerful. Awe. Respect. Maybe even a little bit of connection.

🌞 A Perfect Morning

Yup…a wonderful morning.

And the best part? Since we’re members, we’ll be back again soon. And who knows…maybe next time Raul will be in a better mood.

I think tigers are one of the more unique animals, I love their coloring. My favorite animal (even though it’s a water bird) is the Common North American Loon. I love how they glide through the water almost in slow motion then bob under to grab a fish for breakfast. Some think a Loon is a duck but it’s not. It’s a beautiful water bird with such a interesting “voice”.

Such a special experience, and those photos are absolutely stunning. The face-to-face moment with Raul must have been unforgettable. You can really feel the sense of awe and respect coming through.
