Generally, I don’t read the The Wall Street Journal, but there was an article that really caught my eye. It was titled, “The Panic Over ‘Tech Neck’ – and Race for a Cure.”
Wouldn’t that make you stop and take a look too?
To be honest, I had a feeling I knew what it was about—and sure enough, I was right.
According to the article, Americans spend an average of 5 hours and 16 minutes a day on their phones. And for Gen Z, that number jumps to a whopping 6 hours and 27 minutes daily. That’s a lot of time spent staring down at a screen.
And that, my friends, is where “Tech Neck” comes in.
So, What Exactly Is Tech Neck?
Tech Neck isn’t just about a sore or stiff neck (although that can happen too). It’s something a bit more… visible.
Wrinkles. Sagging. Lines across the neck.
All from constantly tilting your head downward to check your phone, scroll social media, or send one more text.
Over time, that repeated motion and posture can cause the skin on your neck to crease—kind of like folding a piece of paper over and over again. Eventually, those folds don’t smooth out.
A Problem for the Younger Crowd
What really surprised me is that this isn’t just something we “seasoned folks” deal with.
Apparently, it’s becoming common for people in their 20s to develop neck lines that used to show up much later in life. Imagine being 25 and already noticing changes that remind you of your mom—or maybe even your grandmother!
That’s a bit of a wake-up call.
The “Fix-It” Frenzy
The article goes on to talk about creams, treatments, and all kinds of gadgets promising to smooth, tighten, and reverse Tech Neck.
Because here’s the thing…
But honestly? I’ll let you go down that rabbit hole yourself if you’re curious. https://www.wsj.com/style/beauty/tech-neck-wrinkles-smartphone-skincare-5ca72a06?st=cyAvc6&mod=1440&user_id=66c4bf115d78644b3aa28458
My Neck, My Story
Fortunately, I don’t have Tech Neck.
I have something else entirely—an old-age neck. And you know what?
I’m pretty proud of it.
Every line, every little change tells a story. A life lived. Smiles shared. Years experienced. And I wouldn’t trade that for the smoothest neck on the planet.
Something to Think About
Still, it does make you wonder…
How much time are you spending looking down at your phone or device?
Are you noticing those little lines starting to appear?
Or maybe—just maybe—it’s a gentle reminder to look up a little more often.
Take in the world around you. Make eye contact. Smile at someone walking by.
Because life isn’t happening on your screen.
It’s happening all around you.
What about you—do you think Tech Neck is something to worry about, or just another trend we’ll laugh about later? 😊
