Abstract portrait painting

This past Sunday marked a significant milestone in my artistic journey—I completed my very first abstract portrait painting. Inspired by an online class and fueled by curiosity, I delved into the world of abstract art, a realm that allows for expressive freedom and unconventional techniques.

Sunday’s Creation: A New Beginning

After researching various abstract portrait styles and gathering inspirational images, I spent three hours to my first piece. The process was liberating, allowing me to experiment with colors and forms beyond traditional methods.

Motivated by my initial success, I embarked on a second painting the following morning. This session extended to four hours, partly due to some of my paints aging and not applying as smoothly. While I felt this piece didn’t quite match the first, it still held its own charm. Each brushstroke taught me more about the medium and my personal style.

The Process: From Sketch to Canvas

My approach begins with a sketch to establish the composition. Then, I immerse myself in acrylics, embracing the abstract technique that encourages the use of bold and unexpected color combinations. Interestingly, I often find myself gravitating towards harmonious color schemes—perhaps a reflection of my innate preference for balance.

I’m planning to create another piece tomorrow, this time exploring a different color palette and incorporating more floral elements. The journey into abstract portraiture has been both challenging and rewarding, pushing me to step outside my comfort zone and embrace the unpredictable nature of art.

Abstract painting may not resonate with everyone, but the process has been a source of joy and self-discovery for me. I’m curious—do you engage in any unconventional or creative activities? I’d love to hear about your experiences and inspirations.

Well done! I’m not very artistic and I’m always impressed by the talent of others. Way to go for diving into an area that was a little out of your comfort zone. You did great!

Thanks. If you aren’t artistic this would be good for you. It’s very lose. You really can’t do anything wrong.

Nice! I love when people try new modes. I have several artist friends and of late several have gone into totally directions than they had been in. I love seeing their new work, and like with you, to hear/see the joy they feel.

I really like the color scheme, as well as the floral hair.

I too have been enjoying some abstraction. It was something that I thought was very much beyond me. But when I started getting into abstract art, I realized that it felt very freeing and very creative and very colorful. And even… fun.

Very interesting pieces, Eydie. I do some abstracts but it’s not my favourite. And I do a little of everything except oil. I do love drawing – figures and faces. One winter I went through a family album and drew my whole family from the photos.

LOL I don’t do faces. Funny, isn’t it? I did enjoy these, though. There’s no right or wrong.
