Tucked inside the 55+ community where I live is a hidden gem known as Gail’s Garden. It’s not just a garden—it’s a full-blown desert wonderland, lovingly built and cultivated by a woman named Gail. I haven’t met her personally, but around here, everyone knows who she is. Her work speaks for itself.

Stretching about 3/4 of a mile long, the garden is a winding path of desert beauty. You’ll find all kinds of cacti—big, small, sculptural, and even dangerous. Yes, I’m looking at you, Jumping Cholla. Don’t let the name fool you into getting close—they’re called “jumping” for a reason. Trust me, unless you want an unplanned trip to the ER, admire from a safe distance.

Right now, many of the Prickly Pear are budding with blooms, and in about a week—maybe sooner—they’ll be bursting with color. I keep checking on them every few days, waiting for that beautiful moment.

But Gail’s Garden is more than just plants. It’s a visual experience. Colorful pots of all shapes and sizes are tucked between the cacti. Indian ladders are artfully arranged with pottery. There are fences decorated with cow skulls, old saddles, and quirky statues that range from whimsical to rustic. Every corner holds something new.

It’s a favorite walking spot for many of us—some stroll through on foot, others cruise by in their golf carts, always checking to see if Gail has added something new. It’s peaceful, creative, and totally unique.

What Gail has created didn’t happen overnight. It’s taken years of dedication, care, and a great eye for detail. I admire her from afar, and I’m grateful to live somewhere where someone like her has added so much beauty to our everyday lives.

If you’re ever near, take a stroll through Gail’s Garden. Just don’t get too close to the cholla!

Would you like to stroll alongside this garden?

Yes, they can be dangerous. Stay far enough away, and you’ll be just fine.
